WE KNOW SEO

SEO is one of those fields of digital marketing that is often made into an obscure and complex science.

Too often do we hear of digital marketers drowning their clients under technical terms they do not understand or see web companies use SEO as an easy way to make more money from a website sale. This has sadly lead people to be skeptical about SEO and to struggle to trust SEO companies. The constant flow of sales people making big promises on the phone also leads to negativity around SEO. The sad truth is that a lot of honest business owners have fallen (and continue to fall) into the trap. They hear all those technical words and think "wow, this guy is an expert", they pay a heavy fee for some work that they don't really understand and a lot of time, the company doesn't actually do any of the services they had promised because they know that the honest business owner doesn't have a way to examine their work!

While yes, the world of SEO can get very complex, the fundamentals of it are very simple. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process by which a website is optimized to better be understood by a Search Engine (like Google). To understand what we try to achieve when Optimizing a website for the Search Engines, we need to first understand the simple logic that search engines go by: Google has always prioritized the experience of its users over anything else. They are quite clear about it. Their number one mission as a Search Engine is to give people whatever they are looking for as quickly and easily as possible. Google doesn't want anyone to be searching through page 2 or 3 of the results they have presented to their users before the users find what they want. That's why "Googling" has become so popular. From a user's perspective, Googling something will give you a satisfying answer to your question with very little effort.

Whether or not your website will appear on the first page of the Search Engine Result Page (SERP) depends on whether or not your website provides what the user is looking for and gives the user a good experience.

This is mainly determined by 2 key evaluations from Google, that we can simplify this way:

1 - Google has a robot that goes through your website (and every other) and reads all of the content and all of the code to understand what your website is about and how good the information on your website is. The technical name for this is "crawling" (eg. "I will do a request on the search console for Google to crawl the new URL faster"). When crawling your website, Google looks at a few key metrics that are known, and others that are secret (every SEO guy tries to guess which other metrics are evaluated). Some of the most basic metrics are listed below, but there are many others:

  • Page Load Speed (website slow to load = bad user experience)

  • Website Security (things such as the SSL security certification)

  • Metadata (text that is attached to the page or the pictures to tell Google what it's about)

  • URL Structure integrity (are there dead links on your site that lead nowhere, do you have many 404 errors?)

  • How well your website is optimized for mobile users (even though we're in 2022, you wouldn't believe how many websites are not mobile friendly!)

2 - Google evaluates the quality of your website's content and determines whether or not it provides good and updated information. This is why you see so many businesses have a news section or a blog section: because having fresh content posted on the website may be something that helps google think that the information on your site is more up to date than on your competitor's site. But Google looks at other metrics, such as how long do users normally stay on your site, and whether or not the content from your site is linked to on other places on the web (giving your site "authority").  Many SEO companies include some blog content being written and some external links being built as part of their service. If you are a local business (meaning you offer your services to a specific location), google also looks at the metrics from your Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business) to see how many visitors you have and what the reviews tell about the quality of your service. So putting things in place so as to collect more google reviews is a must when doing SEO for local businesses.

Our approach to SEO is simple: every case is different. We use professional tools such as SEMrush and Screaming Frog to crawl your website ourselves and get a report on the same findings that Google's robot gets when it crawls your website. That report gives a series of ratings and highlights areas to work on, as well as lists any technical errors there may be. Think of like the computer that your mechanic plugs into your car to know what's wrong with it. From the report, we identify things that can be fixed easily (quick wins) so as to improve your rankings faster, and develop an SEO strategy for you. After that initial step, we decide how much time we should spend improving your technical SEO, your onpage SEO and your offpage SEO so as to get the maximum amount of results from the package you are on.
